Blade sharpening as a service in Senica

In our shop at Obchodná 493/2A we sharpen and balance rotary-mower blades, check STIHL brushcutter blades, and advise on DAKR drum knives. Come during opening hours, or call briefly first.

When it makes sense to come right away:

the blade hit a stone or curb and you are unsure whether it can still be sharpened
the mower vibrates after a home sharpening attempt
you do not want to risk deck removal or correct torque
you need a replacement blade and are unsure of the type
it is a Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA rider, where vibration gets expensive

Home touch-ups still make sense for even dulling on a straight blade without cracks. This article helps you know a safe procedure and when it is calmer to leave the work to the workshop.

Why a sharp blade saves the machine and the lawn

A dull blade needs more speed and force. The engine and battery (on STIHL battery models) work harder, the deck clogs more easily, and the lawn looks “scraped”. A clean cut closes the stem better, the lawn recovers faster, and fuel or energy use drops.

On Cub Cadet and SUPA TECHNIKA riders and on everyday MTD and WOLF-Garten mowers the same rule applies: cut quality starts at the blade edge, not in power advertising.

Safety before every job

Sharpening without preparation is a common source of injuries. Keep this order:

Switch off the engine and let the blade stop fully.
Disconnect the spark plug (petrol) or remove the battery (STIHL battery).
For a STIHL brushcutter set the machine on a stable surface and make sure it cannot start by accident.
Wear safety glasses, sturdy footwear, and cut-resistant gloves.
Loosen the blade with the correct wrench. Block it as the manufacturer describes, not with a free hand against the edge.
After sharpening check fasteners, washers, and tightening torque per the model manual.

Never sharpen a blade on a running machine. Never reach under the deck while the drive is connected. If you prefer not to demount it yourself, bring the machine to Zakservices.

Sharpening a rotary-mower blade

A rotary mower has a horizontal steel blade under the chassis (deck). Typical on STIHL, MTD, WOLF-Garten and on Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA cutting decks.

Preparation and removal

Clean the deck of grass and mud (dry cloth or plastic scraper, not against the engine cowling).
Mark blade orientation (which side is up) so you remount it the same way.
After removal check for cracks, bends, broken teeth, and a worn centre hole.

If you see a crack or a strong bend, do not sharpen. Replace the blade. We help choose a replacement from stock.

How to sharpen

The goal is not a “razor for shaving”, but restoring the original edge angle and equal material removal on both ends.

Sharpen only the lower (cutting) edge to the original bevel. A common angle is about 30 degrees, but always respect the original shape.
Use a file, sharpening stone, or angle grinder with a fine disc. With a grinder take short strokes and cool the blade often so the steel does not overheat to a blue tint.
Remove metal equally on left and right. Asymmetry causes vibration.
Keep the “air lift” wings on the blade ends. Grinding them away worsens bagging and mulching.
Do not grind the blade into a thin foil. An overly thin “razor” catches on stone more easily and cracks.

As a guide: on a typical home lawn, check and light touch-up from 1 to 3 times per season depending on area, sand, and mowing frequency. After a stone hit, check the blade at once. If you want certainty on angle and balance, have the blade sharpened at Zakservices.

Balancing the blade (mandatory step)

After sharpening always balance a rotary-mower blade.

Use a simple balancer, or hang the blade on a horizontal nail or bolt through the centre hole.
The heavier side drops. On the heavier side remove a little material gently (not on the cutting edge, but on the heavier part) until the blade stays level.
Repeat until the balance is stable.

An unbalanced blade causes: - vibration into hands and bearings - faster wear of the crankshaft and clutch - an uneven cut and noisier running

On Cub Cadet and SUPA TECHNIKA riders vibration damage is even more expensive (deck bearings, belts). Balancing pays off. In the workshop we balance together with sharpening.

Remounting

Clean the mating surfaces.
Keep the correct rotation direction and blade side.
Tighten the nut / bolt per the manual. After the first minutes of running (spark plug or battery connected only after the check), with the machine off and disconnected, check tightness again.

Brushcutter: blades and cutting heads

STIHL brushcutters do different work: edges, ditches, scrub, denser growth. Sharpening depends on the cutting tool. We can check a metal blade at Zakservices and sharpen or recommend replacement according to condition.

Metal blade / multi-purpose blade

Remove the blade only after a full stop and drive disconnection.
Check cracks around the mounting and teeth. A cracked blade replace, do not repair by welding in a home workshop.
File each tooth / each edge equally, keep the original angle.
After sharpening check that the blade sits true and that the mounting (cup, nut) is in the order given in the STIHL manual.
When working with a metal blade always use the prescribed guard and PPE.

Line head (trimmer head)

You do not sharpen line. Replace worn line with the correct diameter and shape for the head. A dull feel with line often means: - line that is too short or too thin - poor winding - worn exit eyelets on the head

Then replace line or head parts, not use a file. In the shop we advise on line diameter for your STIHL head.

When to choose blade and when line

Line: soft grass, lawn edges, finer work around fences.
Metal blade: denser growth, scrub, places where line cannot keep up (always per manual and guard).

If you are clearing a whole meadow, pair a STIHL brushcutter with a DAKR drum mower rather than relying on brushcutter blade sharpening alone. Blade sharpening does not replace the right machine for the area.

DAKR drum-mower knives

A DAKR drum mower cuts with a disc of swinging knives. They often “fold” on stones, which protects the shaft, but the knives themselves wear.

In practice: - Check knives before the season and after every heavier mowing with stones. - A light edge touch-up with a file can extend life if the knife is not deformed. - With heavy wear, a broken tip, or uneven loss replace the knife set, not one piece “blindly”. An uneven set worsens running. - Keep correct fastening and locking parts per DAKR documentation.

Sharpening drum knives makes sense with even dulling. With damage, replacement is safer and often cheaper than risking vibration in the meadow. We can assess the set at Zakservices.

How often to check the blade during the season

Before the first mowing: visual check, tightness, optional touch-up.
After a hit on a curb, stone, or root: immediate check.
Mid-season: with regular mowing, after about 10 to 20 hours of work check sharpness and balance.
In autumn: clean, inspect, and decide to sharpen or order a new blade before spring.

On sandy ground and frequent path edges the blade dulls faster than on a clean lawn.

5. Do you sharpen line on a STIHL brushcutter?

No. Replace the line. You sharpen only metal blades, and only if they have no cracks.

6. What about DAKR drum knives?

Check them regularly. With even dulling, touch up lightly. With damage or uneven wear, replace the set. We can assess condition in the shop.

7. How sharp should a mower blade be?

Sharp enough to cut paper or a grass stem cleanly, not for shaving. An overly thin “razor” is fragile and dangerous on impact.
