How to choose a chainsaw
Selection of a chainsaw STIHL according to the work: bar length, hobby or stronger class, petrol or battery.
How to choose a chainsaw
Choose a chainsaw based on what you will be cutting: for firewood and smaller logs, a shorter bar and a hobby class STIHL are sufficient. For thicker logs and long work sessions, a longer bar and a more powerful petrol model; for quick jobs around the house and less noise, a battery-powered saw STIHL. The length of the bar should match the diameter of the wood with some allowance, not “the longer, the better.” A sharp chain and proper bar maintenance are just as important for safety and performance as the motor itself. At Zakservices in Senica, we sell and service chainsaws STIHL and help with selection according to your work and stock.

Rail length: first selection filter
The guide bar determines what diameter of wood you can comfortably cut. A practical rule: the effective length of the bar should be at least slightly longer than the diameter of the log you will be cutting most often. A bar that is too long for a small saw worsens maneuverability. A bar that is too short forces you into dangerous positions and multiple cuts.
Orientation table
| Typical work | Approximate length of the strip | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Branches, smaller firewood, around the house | approximately 30 to 35 cm | easy to handle, hobby and battery-powered |
| Common firewood, medium logs | approximately 35 to 40 cm | the most common compromise for households |
| Thicker trunks, longer seasonal work | approximately from 40 to 45 cm and more | requires adequate engine power |
Always check the exact range according to the specific model STIHL and the manual. The bar and chain must match each other (pitch, number of links, groove width).
What else to watch for on the strip
- Condition of groove and nose (wear shortens the lifespan of the chain)
- Proper chain tension (too loose will come off, too tight will overheat)
- Lubricating the bar with chain oil (check the level before each use)
- Rotate the bar according to the manual to ensure even wear
A dull chain on a good bar cuts poorly. A sharp chain on a worn bar does too. Keep both parts in good condition together.
Petrol or battery STIHL
The same logic applies to saws as to lawn mowers and brush cutters. A more detailed general comparison of gasoline and battery can be found in a separate article in this series. Here is a summary for saws.
What saw STIHL
Choose which, when:
- you saw shorter sections around the house, at the cottage with a charger, or in the workshop
- you want a quieter start and less exhaust while working
- you already have STIHL batteries in the AK or AP system
- you need quick “precise” cuts without long warming up and mixing fuel
The Aku saw STIHL is excellent for ordinary household work. When preparing a large volume of firewood all day, plan on multiple batteries or consider petrol.
Gasoline chainsaw STIHL
Choose gasoline when:
- you saw longer and further from electricity
- you work with thicker trunks
- you need endurance without breaks for charging
- seasonally you process a larger volume of wood
Gasoline requires the correct fuel and oil for the mixture according to the instructions, cleaning the filter, the spark plug, and more noise. Power reserve and long working hours are its strengths.
| Criterion | Battery STIHL | Petrol STIHL |
|---|---|---|
| Typical work | shorter, around the house | longer, in the field |
| Noise | lower | higher |
| Endurance | by batteries | by fuel |
| Maintenance | battery, chain, bar | engine + chain + bar |
| Suitable for | hobby and comfort | hobby and heavier seasonal work |
Hobby or harder work
The class of the machine should match the frequency and intensity of work, not the ambition to 'have the strongest.' We also discussed the difference between hobby and more demanding use in the article hobby or professional.
Hobby and everyday household
- occasional firewood sawing
- maintenance of trees in the garden (within safe reach from the ground, without the risk of working at heights without authorization and equipment)
- shorter bar, lower weight, easier to handle
Heavy and frequent work
- regular processing of a larger volume of wood
- thicker trunks and longer seasonal days
- stronger engine, more robust bar, better anti-vibration, and durability of components
Buying a 'too large' saw for a beginner often leads to fatigue and less safe work. Buying a 'too small' saw for thick logs leads to pushing into the cut, overheating, and disappointment. A middle way according to real wood is the most sensible.
Approximately on the market (not a price list Zakservices), hobby saws range from the lower hundreds of EUR upwards depending on the bar and equipment. Stronger and specialized setups are more expensive. We will confirm stock and price in Senica.
Chain and bar: maintenance determines the saw
Even the best saw STIHL cuts poorly with a dull chain. Basic care:
- Sharpen the chain in time. Signs of dullness are fine dust instead of chips, pushing into the cut, and a crooked cut.
- Check the depth gauges after sharpening. A depth gauge that is too high cuts weakly. One that is too low makes the chain aggressive and dangerous.
- Tension the chain according to the instructions. After warming up, the slack changes, so check it during work as well.
- Refill chain oil and check if the bar is lubricated (oil trace during test).
- Clean the bar groove and lubrication holes from sawdust.
- When replacing, use the correct pitch and length of the chain for the bar.
You can find a detailed procedure for grinding, angles, and depth gauges in the article How to Properly Sharpen a Chainsaw Chain. In Zakservices we help with choosing files, templates, and also with assessing whether to sharpen or already replace the chain or guide bar.
Before and after the season, also take care of regular engine maintenance and storage conditions according to the tips for spring preparation and autumn preservation.
Safety when working with a chainsaw
A chainsaw is one of the most dangerous garden machines. The harsh tone here is not an exaggeration. It represents the minimum of safety.
- Head, eye, and ear protection, cut-resistant gloves, sturdy footwear, and suitable trousers.
- Before starting, check the chain brake, tension, lubrication, and surroundings (stable stance, escape route).
- Hold the saw with both hands. Do not reach across a running chain.
- Watch out for kickback (reverse strike) in the upper quarter of the bar tip. Cut with the correct part of the bar and in a stable manner.
- Do not cut above shoulder height and do not stand in the line where a trunk or branch could fall.
- For battery saws, before checking or replacing the chain, remove the battery. For gasoline saws, turn off the engine and follow the instructions to prevent accidental starting.
- Do not work when tired, on unstable ground, or under the influence of alcohol.
If you are a beginner, start with shorter cuts on securely supported wood. Leave large trees and risky felling situations to the experienced.
How to choose step by step
- Note down the most common diameter of the wood and how often you cut.
- Choose the bar length with an appropriate allowance.
- Decide on electric or gasoline based on durability and workplace.
- Check the availability of chains, oil, and service.
- Consider protective equipment as seriously as the chainsaw itself.
- Plan for sharpening and lubrication, not just the first cut.
What to prepare besides a saw
A good saw STIHL without equipment around it will rather slow you down:
- protective equipment (eyes, ears, gloves, sturdy footwear)
- chain oil and, depending on the type, also oil for the fuel mixture
- round file, template, and flat file for depth gauges
- spare chain of the correct pitch
- stable base for sawing (sawhorse, stand)
If you are in an STIHL system, check the battery capacity and whether the charger keeps up with your work pace. With gasoline, plan for a canister, a funnel, and proper fuel storage.
Common mistakes in selection and use
- Too long a bar for a lightweight hobby motor. The saw is hard to control and the cut is uncertain.
- Pushing into the cut with a dull chain. You damage the bar, the motor, and yourself.
- Working without the chain brake and without checking tension.
- Saving on bar oil. A dry bar overheats and wears out extremely quickly.
- Underestimating kickback. Even an experienced operator follows the rules. A beginner even more so.
If you are hesitating between two lengths of the strip, in the store the one that fits the most common wood often wins, not the one-time thickest trunk of the season. For an exceptionally thick piece, another method or another machine can be found.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What length of bar for ordinary firewood?
The most common range is approximately from 35 to 40 cm depending on the diameter of the logs and the model. We will fine-tune it exactly according to your wood in the store.
2. Is the STIHL saw enough for a winter full of firewood?
For a small to medium volume, yes, with a battery reserve. For a large volume and thick trunks, gasoline is often more reliable.
3. How does a hobby saw differ from a stronger class?
By weight, endurance during long work, anti-vibration, and power reserve. A hobby saw is sufficient for occasional sawing. Frequent heavier work requires a more robust machine.
4. How often should you sharpen the chain?
As soon as the cutting worsens, ideally after working in sand or in contact with the ground. Frequent light sharpening is better than one heavy sharpening.
5. Why does the saw cut crookedly?
Often the left and right teeth are not equally sharp, the bar is worn, or the tension is incorrect. Check both the chain and the bar.
6. What oil for the chain?
Use oil intended for lubricating the bar and chain according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Regular motor oil is not a substitute.
7. Can I change the bar length on the same saw?
Only within the range allowed by the manufacturer for the given model, and with the correct chain. Not every longer bar fits every engine.
8. How much does a typical hobby saw cost?
On the market, often from a few hundred EUR upwards depending on the rail and equipment. This is a guideline, not a price list Zakservices. We will confirm stock in person.
Service and lifespan
The lifespan of the saw STIHL is not just about engine hours. It's about whether:
- sharpen sooner rather than later
- grease the bar with every use
- clean the filter and cooling
- store the machine in a dry place
- replace the chain and bar before they damage other parts
In Zakservices we can assess the wear of the guide bar, the sprocket, and the overall condition. Sometimes a new chain is enough. Sometimes the bar has already 'eaten up' the groove, and replacing it prevents further damage.
