What is mulching and what is harvesting

Mulching

During mulching, the blade (or a special mulching blade) chops the grass multiple times into small pieces. The material falls back between the blades. There it decomposes and returns nutrients and moisture. The basket does not fill up, or a mulching plug is used instead of a basket.

Mulching works best for:

frequent mowings (the grass does not have time to overgrow)
on dry to slightly damp grass
at an appropriate mowing height (you are not taking too much at once)
on a denser lawn that 'hides' the material

Collection into the bin

During mowing, the lawnmower sucks in or throws out the cut grass into the collection basket. The surface remains clean. The material is then composted, removed, or otherwise processed off-site.

Harvest makes sense when:

on wet and heavy grass
with a longer mowing interval and taller growth
on an ornamental lawn where you want an immediately 'tidy' appearance
during establishment, overseeding, and treatment of mold or felt formation, when you do not want to leave biomass on the area

Simple rule

If the grass disappears between the blades after mowing, mulch. If clumps, stripes, and wet tufts remain on the surface, collect them or shorten the mowing interval.

Cub Cadet and SUPA TECHNIKA

With riders and tractor solutions Cub Cadet and SUPA TECHNIKA, mulching is tied to the cutting deck and a mulching kit for the given deck width. On large areas, mulching saves time because you don’t have to stop to empty the grass bag. However, with wet grass, even a rider can leave clumps. In that case, slow down, raise the height, or switch to collection if the equipment allows it.

Mulching is not a substitute for a meadow

Practical tips for the Slovak season

In spring alternate according to the weather. After a rainy week, it's better to collect. After a dry week, mulch.
In summer mulch more often and at a higher height. A short stress cut in the heat is not good for the lawn.
After vacation first raise the cutting height, mow, then gradually lower it. Mulching a large volume at once is a mistake.
In autumn with a large amount of leaves, collect more often, or combine with raking. Mulching leaves alone never does the job neatly.
Blade check during the season. Mulching with a dull blade is one of the most common reasons for disappointment.
When choosing the mower size according to the area (approximately 400, 800, or 2000 m²), also consider whether you will mostly mulch or use the bag. A large area and frequent collection is tiring. Mulch or a rider Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA can change that.

For gasoline lawn mowers STIHL, MTD, and WOLF-Garten, as well as for battery STIHL, the same applies: the mulching or collection mode does not change the need for basic engine or battery maintenance. It only changes the work with the biomass.

what the volume of the grass box is and whether emptying it suits you

6. Do robotic mowers also mulch?

Robotic mowers (for example STIHL iMow in the relevant class) typically mow frequently and short, which in practice is a form of continuous mulching. They do not have a traditional large bag.

7. When to collect even if I prefer mulching?

On wet grass, after a long break, during overseeding, during treatment, and when you want an immediately clean look.

8. Can mulch help instead of fertilizer?

Partially yes, not completely. Mulch returns some nutrients. For an intensive lawn, fertilization may still be necessary. We will advise according to the condition of the area.
